When the band started out in 1997, the music they created were rock sounds spiced with funk and other type of music. At the time, they were a group of three with one guitarist (Yutaka Dokko), one bassist (Naoki Fujimoto) and one drummer (Kei Kusakabe). However, as soon as YOW-ROW, the vocalist, joined the lineup, their sound changed to a more electronic based one. As they moved on with their new sound, it seemed to draw them nearer to the music that flooded the America’s mid-90s hit chart. Their sounds are, in a way, nothing new. They tread on the trodden footsteps of those who started ahead of them, and eat up the music those people have created. A purely “Japanese” way of thinking, taking in whatever sounds that will possibly give their band their depth, is what makes this band the way they are. Following the footsteps of the predecessors is just a philosophy that many other bands follow and is something that will let the music of GARI evolves as time passes by.

1999 was the year the band GARI established their own label, DeadstocksandwicH Records, where they released a mini album, Flight Recorder, and single BRAIN SHOOTER. After these releases, they placed more importance in taking part in compilation albums, hosting monthly performance events, and giving live performances all over Japan, rather than their music making. However, in 2003 they took a break from all such activities and started working on their own music once more. The next time they picked up their instruments in 2004, they started on their live performances.

Their major debut came with their album e.go.is.tick in which they shouted as if to fight against whatever confronted them. This album was ranked 3rd in the weekly selling chart of the TOWER RECORD store in Shibuya, also recorded 14th in the nationwide sales chart.

In September, they gave their first oneman. A live performance created with vibrant sound and images went on for 51 minutes, which seemed to swallow up the hall and overwhelm the people who were there.

Following November they released a remix album al.tru.is.tick asking musicians such as Tim Gane (STEREOLAB) and Jack Dangers (MEAT BEAT MANIFESTO) to arrange their music pieces. They are working on their band as seriously as ever and this year, they've released two new albums: NEO RADIO STATION and Masked.
